Bio

Michael G. Lee, Ph.D., is the critically acclaimed author of When the Band Played On: The Life of Randy Shilts, America’s Trailblazing Gay Journalist. A writer, researcher, and educator with more than twenty years’ experience in social work and HIV/AIDS services, Michael seeks opportunities for telling stories that illuminate larger social themes and previously unexplored ideas. His interest in the life of Randy Shilts came about while he was researching the origins of 1970s-era gay and lesbian community services and their influence on AIDS organizations of the 1980s.

Michael holds a Ph.D. in Social Work from the University of Minnesota, as well as a B.A. in English and a Master’s degree in Social Work from Michigan State University.  He lives in Minneapolis, where he teaches graduate courses at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota while supporting several local and national nonprofits as a grant writing consultant.
